Axis & Allies , Combat Plane Dispute?
My friend is attacking sea zone 55, next to Western US.
My other friend, the Defender, is declaring that his planes in Western US, can defend sea zone 55.
I do not believe this to be true….but my friend is hot headed and has bent rules in the past.
Please help, the game is happening right now…
Please if you can, make a Rule citation in a book, or web link for clarification.

if said fighter is on a carrier in the sea zone affected
it can defend with other units in that zone
if it’s in the western US zone it defends in that zone not the sea zone
defending fighters do not move out of the zone they are based in
there for he is cheating by using his land based fighters to defend a sea zone without a carrier in that zone
all fighters must have a place to land after the battle or enough movement to return to a carrier or friendly land base or they crash and are removed from the game till rebuilt
example
fighter based on carrier in hawaiian sea zone is attacked by several naval units
fighter wins the battle but the carrier is sunk by sub
fighter must move to a friendly land base or carrier with available space
or it dies
