How do I stop my cats from defecating at the back door?
We have a mulched/landscaped area at our back door and our two indoor/outdoor cats have been using this area as a litter pan. It stinks horribly! Is there something I can spread or spray in this area so they’ll defecate somewhere else outside? (We are not interested in maintaining a litter box outdoors.)
You have 2 aspects to consider here. 1 is making the cats not want to use the area by the back door. And 2 is to give them a more desirable place to go.
1. How do you stop your cats using the mulched area by the back door?
Pet supply stores sell citrus scented sprays that cats hate but smell fine to humans. These are generally designed to be sprayed on furniture that you don’t want your cat sitting on or scratching but I’m sure would work just as well for this purpose. You may just have to use a little more as it would be absorbed into the ground.
The only problem with this is that I have found that while this works brilliantly for some cats, others don’t seem to care. It’s worth a try though.
2. You need to give your cats a more desirable place to go to the toilet if you want them to stop going by the back door.
I would suggest delegating a patch of your garden for this use. It should not be so far from the back door that they won’t go there, but not so close that the smell is unpleasant for you. You should definitely use the same kind of mulch and make the area as similar as you can to their current favourite toilet spot.
If you make a better toilet spot for them and ruin their current toilet spot, it only makes sense that they will quickly move on.
