Battery Dimage
camera cleaning help?
so over the summer i was given a Konica minolta dimage Z5 digital camera that was my aunt’s who passed away. unfortunately i haven’t really had a reason to use it until now and where the batteries go is all this mold looking stuff that I’m assuming came from the batters and one of the plastic parts on the flap that holds the batteries in has broken off. I havent looked into how much it will cost or anything but if anybody out there is familiar or knows cameras very well i would really appreciate you to answer back and let me know if its gonna be a waste of time and money and how much you might think.

I have to disagree with Fishmeister on his recommendation for solving this problem although his advice is usually excellent. The icky “mold” stuff is corrosion from chemicals that have leaked from the batteries which is usually acidic in nature so using vinegar may remove the gunk but it can also increase the acidic reaction because it is a weak acid, too. I worked in a camera store for years and we always used either denatured alcohol or rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab to clean corroded battery connections because it was less likely to damage the circuit boards and wiring.
I would suggest cleaning the battery connections and use a fresh set of batteries to see if the camera works. As Fishmeister suggested tape the battery cover in place to maintain a good connection. If the camera works with that simple fix then I would recommend having a repair shop estimate the cost of replacing the battery cover. If they can do it for a reasonable price then I would have that done, otherwise I would use it with tape in place and start saving for a current model.

Fishmeister, Thanks for your response. I think the vinegar tip is a quick fix that works for a short time but the acidic coating on wires and solder joints eventually causes them to deteriorate. Alcohol evaporates rapidly and, if any residue remains it is more protective in nature.
