Bellows Camera
Focal length problems regarding photography?
1. The bellows of an adjustable camera can be extended so that the largest film to lens distance is twice the
focal length. If the focal length is 24 cm, the nearest object which can be sharply focused on the film
must be what distance from the lens?
2. In a cinema, a picture 5 cm wide on the film is projected to an image 6.0 m wide on a screen which is
36 m away. The focal length of the lens is about:
I know the equations 1/f = 1/do + 1/di and hi/ho = -di/do but I don’t understand how the film is incorporated into these equations; I can’t really visualize the problem. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
1)…1/ object distance + 1/ image distance = 1 / focal length
1/ object distance + 1 / 48cm = 1 / 24cm
object distance = 48cm

2)…Magnification = 600cm / 5cm = 120
image distance = 36m = 3600 cm
object distance = 3600cm / 120 = 30cm
1/ object distance + 1/ image distance = 1 / focal length
1 / 30cm + 1 / 3600 cm = 1 / FL
focal length = 29.75 cm
