The Classification of Amber
Apart from its obvious attractions for jewellery making, amber has always interested people as a subject for scientific study and research; and many questions still remain unanswered – for example, we do not know the species of tree from which the resin flowed fifty million years ago to form present day Baltic amber; and much still remains to be discovered about the medicinal powers of succinic acid, which is found in large amounts in Baltic amber.
Eighty percent of the supply of amber around the world is Baltic amber , but it is found in many other locations in smaller quantities, primarily in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean, and, of course, many inferior amber substitutes exist, varying from copal, a soft immature form of amber from South America, to artificial compounds such as glass or plastic.
The Management Board of the Gdansk International Fair Company acknowledges the problems caused by the widespread existence of amber substitutes and inferior quality amber products falling well short of the high standards you would expect when buying genuine Baltic amber jewellery. The Board therefore established the Amber Commission, a panel of expects whose task is to inspect the exhibitors’ stands at the annual trade fairs, testing the quality of the amber jewellery and other products on offer, and to disclose and publicise the details of any companies which are in breach of the regulations, which can be quite detailed and rigorous. There is a compulsory system of classification specifically for Baltic amber, used by all members of the International Amber association, which has standardised terms which are used throughout the industry.
These terms apply to natural amber, ‘improved’ amber, pressed amber, copal and hardened copal. Not only does this regulatory system and legal classification ensure that any Baltic amber that a merchant buys which is later used in the manufacture of amber jewellery is genuine and of a high quality, but the Commission also assesses individual items of amber jewellery brought by visitors to the amber fairs.
Much of the amber jewellery made with Baltic amber is mounted in Sterling silver, which is also a legal term and standard, requiring appropriate hallmarking, and so when you purchase any item of amber jewellery from a reputable supplier you know that you are getting the real thing…and not a cheap, substandard imitation.
