Lazer bore sighter question?
I bought the lazer bore sighter to set my air rifle scope so it will be very accurate but i put the screw on that is located on the back of the lazer bore sighter that helps it keep it tight in the barrel and i put the lazer on and look through the scope and i correct it so the lazer is in the center of the scope but i took the lazer bore off and shot outside to see if it was straight and it was not straight and i didnt understand why, I put the lazer back in the barel and looked through the scope again and it was off again! ive tried about 5 times to set it in but its not accurate and even though the lazer is tight in when i take it out and back in its in a different place yet again, how do i set it up? step by step?
It sounds like the bore sighter is just poor and the laser not aligned with the axis of the case that it is in, so every time you insert it, it’s rotated in a different direction. You don’t provide enough information to give any really detailed advice (like the rifle, caliber, distance you sighted in with the laser, distance to your shooting target, what was the error, up/down, left right).
In any case you will not be likely able to precisely sight-in your rifle with an in-barrel laser bore sighter. It should get you “on paper”, so that you can properly finish sighting in with a small amount of trial and error.
There are a couple of reasons why you won’t get perfect sight-in the way you are doing it. First, the laser is probably not a precision instrument, so it is likely that the laser is off by a degree or more.
Second, I assume that you are laser bore-sighting indoors, so your distances are very short, like 10 yards. At that short of range, the height of the scope above the barrel will introduce considerable error if you are lining up cross hair with the laser dot. Also any error at 10 yards will be 10 times greater at 100 yards, so 1/4″ error at 10 will be 2.5 inches at 100.
Third, while that laser is a straight path, bullets do not fly in a straight path. Bullet paths are curved, pulled down be gravity, and pulled left/right by wind.
As a rough guide try this:
1> Measure the distance between the center of the scope and the center of the bore.
2> Insert your laser sight and set the gun so it is projecting to a spot on the wall.
3> Make a mark on the wall above the laser spot that is exactly the distance that you measured in #1.
4> Keep the laser on the spot and sight in your scope to the point marked in #3.
5> Take it outside and take three shoots at a target at whatever range you are sighting in.
6> The three shots should be low by a few inches and may be off a little left/right, so adjust your scope to correct for that.
7> Repeat 5 & 6 until you are hitting your target.
One last thought is make sure your scope is secure on the rifle. A loose scope will change your point of aim every time you shoot, so if your three shoots aren’t reasonable tightly grouped based on the equipment and ammo you are using, then your scope is probably loose or you really need some practice.
