Dobsonian – CCD vs. Secondary Mirror?
Does it make sense and/or is it possible to place a CCD camera at the focal point of a secondary mirror instead of installing a secondary mirror?
What I’m getting at, is that instead of viewing stars and planets with the naked eye and using different lens, what if I just viewed everything on my laptop through a CCD setup in place of the secondary mirror? Is that practical? Or would it just be smarter to leave the secondary mirror in place and just put the CCD setup where the eyepiece would be located?
Well, …, That’s an interesting question and, yes, it is possible. However, there are some disadvantages that you should consider when attempting this modification.
1) The standard dobsonian design does not place the secondary at prime focus but rather off focus so that light can be diverted to the focuser. Thus, you would have to redesign your scope such that the CCD would be placed at prime focus.
2) Filtering would be another issue. With the CCD at the secondary position you’d either not be able to use any filters at all or you’d have to have to design a way to insert filters (Red, green, blue, neutral density, H-alpha, lunar, etc) in from of the CCD. But you could circumvent this with a filter wheel attached to the CCD.
3) Pointing and positioning the scope could be problematic, as well as collimation, as there is a noticeable delay between an action performed and the CCD registering the action on the monitor.
Overall, there are som desgin issues that you’d need to overcome but they’re not insurmountable, however, over the life of the scope the could prove to be problematic.
Personally, I’d put the CCD where the eyepiece should go and leave the secondary alone.
