What should you know about polarized sunglasses?
Polarizing glasses are created through a specialized filter that is applied as a layer in the glass, usually with a grayish color. The layer may be on the glass, between the panes or in the glass embedded itself in a special way (in more expensive models). Filter prevents horizontally polarized light and reduces eyestrain.
UV rays are very harmful to the eyes and if you do not think about how to prevent them you can become a victim of eye diseases and even cancer. There are UVA, UVB and UVC rays, the most dangerous are the UVB, and UVC protect us from the very atmosphere. Note that some expensive glasses are actually made with poor quality glass that does not protect you from harmful UV rays. You feel comfortable with them because they reduce light intensity, but the pupil of the eye expands and becomes more vulnerable to the invisible UV rays. Most often there must be a sticker with information about the protection on the frame or one of the glasses, if there is no stickers go straight head to another model. The European Union said that the sticker must be circular marked CE and numbered from 0 to 4 (so-called factor). The figure shows the ratio of protection from UV radiation to the limitation of light. Glasses with factor 0 will protect you 100% of UV rays, but only 10% of sunlight, 1 or 2 are suitable for everyday use, for example when walking. Glasses by a factor of 3 are most suitable for driving, while those with 4 are used in more extreme situations, for example, high in the mountains, at the sea and others.
Surely a price below 20 euro shows you that these are not quality sunglasses, so be careful. In various markets and stalls you can see models even with tag CE, but it probably is false and has nothing to do with the truth. In most optics there are tests for glasses available with a special instrument that shows the protection factors. You must require that type of testing.
We should not underestimate the choice of frame. What temperatures your glasses will hold and how much you will be comfortable after prolonged use depend on the frame.
- Metal frame – You can fine-tune them according to the shape of your face and they do not interfere with vision. On the other hand they are relatively expensive and can be heated by the sun.
- Nylon – cheaper and more durable than metal. You cannot match the face exactly because there is no tuning method, do not try or you will break them.
The frame goes on and the nose piece can be adjusted to your nose with slight pressure. Furthermore, plastic frames have metal wire inside, which is used to match the glasses to your face. It is important to get comfortable and feel comfortable with your glasses.
