Color Print
Best printer for budding writer who also wants to occasionally print color?
I’m a writer, so I print a lot of black text documents. I was considering getting a personal monochrome laser, but I also occasionally need to print papers with graphics, colored word art, etc.
I want a very low cost per page
I’m willing to spend at high as 275 dollars, but I could be convinced to spend a little more.
Looks don’t really matter (but pretty would be nice)
Print speed doesn’t matter either, but fast would DEFINITELY be appreciated
You might want to consider getting two printers, a monochrome laser and an inkjet. I bought 2 Brother HL2040 monochrome lasers about 3 years ago for $50 each. I found toner refill on ebay for $6 but you need a $3 part called a reset gear to make it work. In thousands of pages, all I ever replaced was the toner. You can still find plenty of $50 black lasers.
Then if you want high resolution color photos you can get the 5-color plus black Epson R280 for $70 at epson.com. It even prints on CDs and DVDs. The reason I have been using and recommending Epson for years is because of the quality, warranty, and inexpensive ink.
The best warranty in the industry. For a year, Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one.
Epson has also made things easier for their customers by standardizing their cartridges. Most of their printers use one of two types. The three-color plus black use T069 (CX5000 CX6000 CX7000 CX7400 CX7450 CX8400 CX9400FAX CX9475Fax NX100 NX105 NX400 Workforce 30/40/500/600 and C120) and the 5-color plus black use T078 (R260 R280 R380 RX580 RX595 and RX680). This means finding cartridges is easy.
I get cartridges for my Epsons from http://ccs-digital.com for under $3 each which hold 50% more ink than standard cartridges.
This would give you two printers which together are still well under your target cost and with low-cost consumables as well.
