Is the National Geographic compact sky and land telescope a good buy? specs 50mm/180X. Need help! ?
This Compact National Geographic Telescope is 50mm/180X. It has a 360mm high quality metal tube, a 50mm 2 element coated anchromatic lens and is supplied with a tripod in a hard case.
Magnification 18 – 180x power range.
Includes:
2 Eyepieces (4mm & 20mm)
2x Image Erector
90 degree Diagonal Mirror
Table-Top Aluminum Tripod
This is little more than a toy. I suppose it might be useful for backpacking trips into remote country where every ounce of weight matters, but then you would get rid of the case to save the weight.
Even then, there are much better choices available, the most obvious being a good pair of 10X50 Binoculars.
The advertised magnification of up to 180X is pure hype. A 50mm lens simply cannot support that much magnification.
In general terms, ANYTIME you see a Telescope advertised by it’s magnification, run the other way, It is a sure sign of a cheap Telescope with poor optics.
To give you some good starting ideas, take a look at the Orion Telescope catalog @ www.telescope.com. They have excellent quality starter equipment at very reasonable prices.
Stay away from places like Department stores, TV shopping channels, ebay, etc. Yes, you can find bargains there, but unless you have a lot of experience, you can’t find them amongst all the junk sold there.
Buy your first Telescope from a reputable dealer. Orion, Celestron and Meade are sometimes referred to as the “big three”. But there are many others. Take a look online and buy good quality equipment.
Find an Astronomy club in your area and go to a few of their star parties. They are free to the public and you’ll have a chance to look through lots of Telescopes before you even spend a Dime.
