Mamiya RZ67 vs. Contax 645?
Hi all,
I’ve got a C645 and the frames are sharp, contrasty, and amazing, but I was thinking of selling the unit for an RZ67 with a 110/2.8. (I only have the 80/2 for the 645, so it’s not like I’ve already sunk loads of cash into a sprawling arsenal of lenses.)
So…
Good move or bad move?
Is the 67 neg really a big enough leap to warrant the trade-up?
Are the 67′s lenses that much better than the 645 Zeiss Optics – better enough to warrant a trade-up?
Is there anything else anyone could add that might help inform my decision? I shoot digital, too (Canon 5d at the moment), but I wanted a nice MF film camera, as I love the look of larger format film.
I’m on the verge here. What would anyone recommend?

It depends.
There are those who shoot an 8×10 view camera over a 4×5 because of the larger negative (I have both). What they loose is ease of handling, higher cost per negative and a sore back from the heavy lifting. My field 4×5 travels more than my 8×10 you can be sure.
At present only the 6×6 and 645 format cameras have available digital packs (we won’t count the 4×5 digital backs), so if you ever go that route, you will want to keep the 645. You will be loosing a stop with the 67 normal lens. While Mamiya lenses are in many ways as good as other MF lenses, they will cost more per equivalent lens (80mm vs 110mm normal lenses are one example)
Another consideration is your enlarger. You will need to get a different enlarging lens for the 6×7 format as well as a new carrier.
It is up to you, but unless you have a major client that needs larger negatives, there is really no reason to move up, unless you are making 4×5 foot enlargements of your work.
