Neither.
They are both great cameras, and you really can’t choose an absolute best between the two. They are both entry level, and have comparable sets of features.
You’ve heard a lot of people tell you to use Canon, well, that’s just your luck, that today mostly Canon users have read your question. The truth is, all photographers are divided into two camps. One camp prefers Canon and can spend hours telling you how it’s better than Nikon, and the other camp will go out of their ways praising Nikon advantages. If you look at professional photographers, that’s people who really know what they’re doing – the market is split nearly evenly between the two, indicating that there is no clear winner.
So, there’s no best camera overall, but there is a best camera for you! How do you know which one? Go to a camera store that has both on display, and mess with them. Bring your memory card if you wish to take some photos to compare. Hold them in your hands, twist around, go through menus and mess with settings, see if one sits in your hands better, or has more intuitive menu or controls. The one that feels right for you is your best camera!
Oh, and don’t mind the megapixel difference. It’s not megapixels that make clear and detailed images. It’s the lens. The kit lenses on both cameras are decent (I think Nikon has a slight edge, but not too significant to drop the other one out of competition), and both manufacturers have wide ranges of additional lenses you can buy now or later.
