There are different fleet of aircrafts ranging C-172/C-182 3 seater single engine,C-206/C-210 5 seater single engine,PATENEVIA P68 4 seater twin engine, Baron 55/58 5 seater twin engine,PA34 SENECA 11 5 seater twin engine, C-208 Caravan 12 seater single engine, Super King air 200 10 seater twin engine pressurized, Citation Jet 7 seater twin engine, LET 410 18 seater twin engine, DHC-6 Twin otter 17 seater twin engine,B1900C 18 seater twin engine pressurized,Ambrear 120 18 seater twin engine, Donnier 228 17 seater twin engine, Dash-8 100 37 seater twin engine, B737-300 115 seater,DC-9 90 seater,Fokker 27-500 40 seater,H748 50 seater,B737-300 Freighter 15 tonner,among other aircrafts. The AS350 Helicopters single engine 3 and 5 seaters.
The base for most of the air operators is Nanyuki Civil Airstrip, Wilson Airport, Mombasa International Airport, Lamu Airport, Malindi, Ukunda, and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Most of the flights out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are for the Regional Jets CRJ,B737,DC-9,ATR42,DASH8-400Q/100 to destinations like Juba,Entebbe,Kigali,Bujumbura,Juba,Mogadishu International,Khartoum,South Africa,Lusaka,Cairo,Lagos,Addis Ababa,Elitrea,Dubai,Eldoret,Malindi,Mombasa,Kisumu,Kitale among other major airports and light aircrafts are also allowed to pick and drop passengers at this airport. Wilson Airport is the second busiest airport in Africa and it handles scheduled and non-scheduled flights with several flying schools carrying out instructional flight training at the same time. At Nanyuki airstrip there are aircrafts and helicopters for charter which have made the connection between Nanyuki-Naivasha,Nanyuki-Mara,Nanyuki-Samburu,Nanyuki-Amboseli,Nanyuki-Tsavo,Nanyuki-Mombasa,Nanyuki-Lamu possible as you do have to get a charter from Nairobi. You are also able to get scheduled flights Nanyuki-Meru-Shaba-Samburu-Mara and if you have a tidy budget then you can book seats but it has to be in advance as the traffic is overwhelming and also there are only a few air charter companies operating commercial flights on these routes. In Mombassa afew air charter companies who operate, air safaris from Mombassa to Malindi-Ukunda –Masai Mara once daily and early scheduled flights to Lamu and late afternoon. Private charters to Mandera,Garissa, Wajir, Elwak, Takaba,Banisa, Marsabit, Moyale, Sololo,Merti, Modogashe,North Horr, Loyengalani, Sibiloi National Park, Kobi For a, Lake Turkana, Daadab, Kakuma, Lokichogio, Rumbek, Yei,Wau, Yambio, Juba, Malkal and even out of Africa using Jet ,turbo prop aircrafts. Recently last year ORLY PARK was launched to decongest the Wilson Airport thereby moving some of the flying schools, recreation sports there. Wilson Airports opens at 0630 hrs and closes at 2030 hrs everyday so for night flights Jomo Kenyatta International Airport serves the purpose and Nanyuki Airstrip opens 0630 hrs and 1800 hrs.
There Non-Governmental organizations operating in remote areas where there bandits and poor road infrastructure with tidy airstrips but some air charter companies have managed to put in there fleet aircrafts with short take-off and landing performance to be able to carry out the operations such as medical evacuation flights, emergency flights, relief supplies for passengers and cargo, project evacuation and monitoring. Those with volume of work have the option of taking aircrafts on wet lease basis which works cheaper though you have to commit minimum guaranteed hours in a month for a period of not less than 3 month. The advantage is when you lease an aircraft and you fly beyond the guaranteed hours the rate per hour reduces. Fixed wing aircrafts are categorized in different groups as piston single engines, piston twin engine, turbo prop single engine ,turbo prop twin engine and jets while the helicopters or choppers are only found in the capacity of 3 and 5 seater AS350 type single engine. Also when chartering to remote areas there is a clearance to be obtained from the Kenyan Police as these are restricted areas before you fly there and it requires at least 1 working day notice. There is also no fuel in these areas thus need to arrange for return fuel or take a bigger aircraft with long range endurance. This might be too expansive and you have to do an earlier booking to enable the air charter company to transport fuel to the nearest airstrip or airport. For those traveling to Garisaa,Mandera,Elwak,Takaba,Banisa are lucky as they can refuel at Wajir Airport as it has both Avgas and JetA-1 fuel. Charter flights to Kisumu, Kitale, Eldoret, Kakamega, Webuye, Busia, and Bungoma there shouldn’t be any worry about fuel as it is 3 hours flight return.
Pilot training has become demanding and this has led into many flying school being established to meet the demand. There are 5 flying schools providing from Private Pilots License to Multi-IR licenses including both ground and flight lessons. The aircrafts used for PPL and CPL are C-150/152,PA-28,C-172 and for Multi-IR Beech craft 58/55,PA-34 SENECA 11,C-310 and any other aircraft approved by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. There consultancy firms that provide and carry out an audit on flying schools for potential students who want to join flying in terms of performance,finances,administration,fleet and licensing for carrying out these services so that you chose a reliable and efficient flying school. You go to a flying school spend the agreed amount for the entire course without achieving your full training to become a pilot and the training takes more time than anticipated. There are some flying schools with all the fleet required but no ground instructors and this will be a barrier to you training as you will not get your license until you pass both ground and flight lessons. It is important you engage a consultant to manage your pilot training needs as it is an expensive course and it will be of no use to invest and come out empty handed. The consultant will do a thorough audit and will advice you on the best way forward and this will save your money before you proceed and waste.
