Electrons from one material are transferred to the other. This creates a surplus negative charge to one material and a deficient negative charge to the other but an approximately equal amount. It is NOT exactly the same.
And: No the leaves do not have to touch, the electrons will transfer only if “scraped” from one surface material to the other however the scraping can be magetic.
