End Lens
What does the letter at the end of the Nikkor lens mean?
I’m looking at new lenses and I am confused as to what the letters at the end mean.
Like
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Wide Angle Lens (What does the D mean?)
50 f/1.4 AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G (What does the G Mean?)
And any other letter that might be on the end of a lens description, can you explain?
D lenses have a distance readout built into them for communicating with the camera. The D lenses will work with any camera, film or digital.
Not all autofocus lenses are D type. The ones without the D work just as good as D lenses.
G lenses are gelded, they will work with some film cameras, the ones that have the command dials, and all digital cameras.
DX Small format sensor, 1.5 crop. You can put a DX lens on a full frame digital, and the camera automatically crops the sensor down to DX size. Bad to do, you 12MP D3 becomes a 6MP camera.
FX Full frame, this is on ethe cameras, not on lenses.
N lenses are Nano coated, it increases the contrast.
VR Vibration reduction
ED Extra low dispersion glass, better image quality
AFS Auto focus servo, will work with all cameras, older manual focus ones in manual focus mode.
Older lenses had P Q and R letters, for number of elements.
The older Nikon manual focus lenses will work on almost any camera, film or digital. You need a D200 or better to do automatic metering. With a D90 or lower, the exposure needs to be set manually.
