Eyepiece Set
telescope.. celestron.. cant see anything?
I bought a celestron 130eq and set it up… I cant see anything in the sky.. just buildings close by. I am using a 20mm eyepiece that came with… How do I see planets? Better eyepiece??
I take it that you have set the telescope up and that you have inserted the eyepiece.
Next, you say that you can see buildings close up. Do you see them clearly? or are they fuzzy?
For the following steps, use the eyepiece with the highest number (if you have a 35 mm, a 20 mm and a 12 mm, then use the 35); this will give you the smallest magnification but the largest field of view (making it easier to find things)
First step is to make sure that the focus is OK for the buildings.
Next, find another easy to see object, but far more distant. I use a church spire almost 2 km away (over a mile). Then I set the focus for that (there should be a little wheel right next to the eyepiece, it moves the eyepiece back and forth to make a sharp focus).
Once you have a focus for a distant object, it should be close enough for planets.
While on the distant object, check the “finder scope” or the telrad (a sighting tube). With the object centred in the main telescope, check where it appears in the finder; that will be the “sweet spot” for tonight (it can change from night to night, that is why I check it before every observing session).
Next, turn the telescope towards the planet, using the finder. Place the planet in the “sweet spot” and, if you are lucky, it will appear somewhere in the main scope. If not, you may have to “jiggle” the telescope (very small movement in all directions).
Once you have the planet, centre it, then adjust the focus.
Once you are OK with the planet, you can, if you want, change the eyepiece (it will be clumsy at first, you need to practice). You will likely have to adjust the focus when you change eyepiece.

If you still have problems, practice during the day (you will need a distant object or the Moon — NEVER ever use the Sun; in fact, set up your telescope in the shade of a building, if you can)
The advantage of practicing during the day is that you can see what your are doing (that dropped eyepiece is much easier to find).
At first, changing eyepiece takes time if you want to do it properly: remove next eyepiece from its holder, remove the protecting cap, put the cap on the old eyepiece (the one already in the scope), remove the old eyepiece from the telescope, insert the new eyepiece, recenter the object, adjust focus.
When going to a smaller eyepiece (bigger magnification), it may happen at first that the planet has moved out from the field of view. Don’t worry, with practice, you will soon be able to switch eyepieces fast enough.
