On my moon filter, it says it is 13% Transmission. What does that mean?
I just bought an Orion moon filter for my reflecting Orion telescope.
The moon filter says it is 13% Transmission.
Does that mean that it will block 13% of the bright light from the moon?
no, it means it transmits 13% of the light and blocks the other 87%.
with a moon filter it doesn’t matter how it does the blocking, but with a solar filter the blocking must be carefully controlled: this is partly why so many are made out of shiny mylar, so they reflect what they don’t block. if they absorbed all that sunlight they would get too hot and fail.
