Fong Lightsphere
Lumiquest Softbox (LQ107) or Gary Fong’s Lightsphere?
I am looking to buy the Lumiquest softbox as I have weddings I do when there are high ceilings, etc.
Is this a good buy?
Is the Lightsphere better?
They both can do what you want, although I prefer a slightly different solution. I use a Lumiquest “ProMax” set. It has an 80/20 bounce diffuser, along with several inserts (white, gold, silver) and a “soft box” that can be attached over the front. It will fit on just about anything. It works very well on my Metz 45 handle mount flashes, and on an old Albinar shoe mount.
The Lightsphere has options to reduce the amount of light lost. Without those options, the Lightsphere throws most of your light everywhere but at your subject. You need a powerful flash with a very fast recycle to use one effectively. Your flash will have to fire at full power almost every time, unless you are very close to your subject. An external battery pack is a very good thing to have when using one.
It’s harder to do with this sort of accessory, but if you can get your hands a both to play with, that would be the best way to choose which one is right for you.
