Best SLR 35mm camera for cheap?
INTRO (skip to bottom for nutshell):
I’m an amateur photographer looking to step up from a little digital point-and-shoot. I live in the SF bay area and there are tons of 35mm SLRs by minolta and the likes floating around for around $100 or so on Craigslist. For now I’ve decided that the $400+ for a DSLR is a bit much.
I’m looking at stuff like the Canon EOS Elan IIE, Minolta SR T SCII, Ikon Contaflex w/ some Carl Zeiss lenses (OLD, ha ha), a Nikon FG, Canon EOS Rebel GII, Nikon N80…
The list goes on forever. Here are MY TWO QUESTIONS…
1. Would a cheap old 35mm SLR be significantly better than a 7.2mp Cybershot?
2. There are a lot of 12mp point-and-shoots out there… would a cheap old 35mm SLR be significantly better than any of those?
3. Are there any models that go for cheap in particular that I should be on the lookout for?

In theory, good film shot with a good lens gives you 20ish mp. You also generally get better high ISO performance and better lenses than point and shoots. An old 35 mm SLR can be significantly better than virtually any camera on the market though if you only get like a zoom from the 1970s it could also be quite a big worse. I would also add the likes of the OM-1 and the AE-1 to your list. AE-1s in particular pop up like every week in my area.
