Your take on carbon fibre tripods…?
I am considering getting a very lightweight Gitzo as I will be taking shots on mountaineering/hiking/bkpkng trips. However I am told that those light CF tripods (like the GT-0530 I was thinking of purchasing) are not of any use as soon as I wind is present. My body is EOS 5D and lenses are the Zoom EF 17-40 mm, f/4L USM and the EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. For $400 a tripod, I was expecting it to do the job in lightly windy conditions for those lenses… Anyways, the official question is: Are those superlight tripods only useful in still conditions and if not, what would be a minimum weight for the tripod to allow me to use those lenses I have? Thanks!!
Thanks for the backpack tip guys. However they make those CF tripods as light as 0.7 kg now so it just seems to me that even with something to counterbalance, there would be a limit to how little a tripod should weigh… Any mountaineers out there? What do you take on your trips?
I’ve used a Benro (C-228), which supposedly has the same specs as the Gitzo (1258 or GT-2530?), and have been very impressed with its performance with some wind present…I was using a heavy Mamiya RZ67 with a wide angle lens However, I recommend that you use that couterbalance hook to hang your backpack or something. I would avoid the lightest Benro (C-028) or maybe the Gitzo equivalent…I saw the legs bow, so the light models might only be good enough for an SLR with mild zoom. I special ordered the Benros from BH Photo.
GT-0530 appears to support more weight than the lightest Benro (C-028)…if it is anywhere close in spec to the C-028, I would say its performance would be marginally acceptable with your lighter lenses in light wind and with counterbalance used…but I would probably avoid using the thinnest (bottom-most) legs, so you might need to crouch down. Overall, it sounds like you will need something a step up from the GT-0530.
Another thing that can help is to get something like an Arca Swiss head to compliment your setup…very strong yet super light (and very expensive.)
If you end up not bringing a tripod, consider a Joby gorilla-pod…it’s better than nothing.
