What are the cheapest MiniDV-quality tapeless cameras?
Thanks for looking, I’m the technician for the media dept at a 6th form college where we are getting a load of new equipment.
I’m trying to decide whether we should make the transition to tapeless video. I know there’s great benefits to HDD/flash video cameras, but I can’t find a comprehensive list of these kinds of cameras anywhere online.
Do you know the cheapest end of video cameras using technology like P2 or firestore recording?

A firestore will set you back about $700. If you use P2, you’ll need to dish out at least $5000 for an HVX200, and each card will cost at least $500. Your best bet is to stick with DV, or if you have the money, a firestore or two for the cameras. Alternatively, since your school probably has laptops, use a program such as Adobe OnLocation to capture directly to the laptop’s hard drive. Granted, this will limit some movement, but if you use the laptop for certain scenes, and then for the shots with more motion, just record to tape, and capture later. I wouldn’t recommend going HDD because the quality is not great, nor is the mpeg-2 compression for editing. Some Flash cameras can offer up to DV level compression, but generally they require lots of storage (expensive), and the cameras themselves are of lower quality. Hope this helps!
