Where can I buy a 35 mm film camera around Los Angeles?
I’m taking a photography class soon and I’ve been thinking of getting a film camera. Please don’t tell me to look on eBay. What film camera would you recomend for an amateur? I’ve recently been looking at a Nikkormat and a Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic ES II.

If you want to buy local, check out Craigslist, I’m sure there are tons of film cameras there in LA. Check your yellow pages for real camera shops too, and give them a call.
My favorite place to buy used online is KEH.com. They are very reputable, consistently rating cameras and lenses as “BGN” (bargain) that would be “excellent” or even “near mint” elsewhere. They also have an excellent return policy.
I would get an old Nikon or Olympus if you want a manual 35mm camera. Nikon is great because of the incredible selection of lenses and complete compatibility within the system from 1959 to now. Olympus cameras and lenses tend to be a bit smaller and less well known, but they are every bit as good as the Nikons. I don’t have any experience with the older Pentaxes, unfortunately.
Nikkormats are nice, but I’m a fan of the F series cameras. I have two F’s, an F3, and I used to have an F5. They’re Nikon’s best cameras, the top pro models since 1959. They’re a little bigger than the semi-pro cameras, but more durable. Nikon SLRs were professionals’ top choice from 1959 to the mid 1980s because they were really that superior to everyone else. Look at photos of journalists from the Vietnam war, and you’ll see tons of Nikons and not much else other than a stray Leica or two.
Looking at what’s on KEH right now, I think an F2 with 50mm f/2 and 105mm f/2.5 lenses would be great for you. The F2 is one of the toughest cameras ever made, all mechanical with an extremely robust horizontal shutter. The 50mm f/2 is one of the best 50mm lenses available, and the 105mm f/2.5 is a legendary portrait lens. Remember the Afghan Girl photo taken by Steve McCurry? It was taken with the 105. As a bonus, you can use both of those lenses with any Nikon digital camera that you may purchase in the future.
As for Olympus, I’m not as familiar with the cameras. I want an OM-4 though, because it has a sophisticated multi-spot meter. It is battery dependent unlike the F2, but the earlier OM-1 is not. I’ve never used any of the Olympus cameras, but they are highly acclaimed. Likewise, Olympus’ lenses are among the best. While probably not as tough or mechanically robust as vintage Nikons, the Olympus cameras are very well built.
Lastly, if you want a compact rangefinder the Canon Canonet QL17 GIII is a great one at a reasonable price. Its 40mm f/1.7 lens is very sharp, even wide open.
I think you’d be happy with any system you buy in to. Just remember, camera collecting is addicting! I’ve got more cameras than I care to count now.
