Cleaning the Kitchen Filters
The kitchen steward is responsible for cleaning the kitchen filters, but cleaning this is not just about wiping the grime and dust off. Here is a detailed process of cleaning the kitchen filters and why it should be done.
Removing the Filters
You have to be very careful when you remove the filters. For this reason, make use of a ladder and make sure that it rests on a level surface under the filter hood and that it is secure. The next thing that you should do is to make sure that the stoves as well as the ovens or grills underneath it are switched off. Remember, filter hood can burn you, especially if it is still very hot.
With the use of asbestos gloves to protect your hands, gently push the kitchen filter hood upwards before turning it slightly. Once done, remove all the kitchen hood filters and place them on the trolley for cleaning.
Making Use of the Steam-Clean Machine
There are restaurants that make use of a steam-clean machine in cleaning the kitchen hood, and if you are going to use this, make sure that you have poured in the right amount of oven cleaner solution into its water tank. Always use gloves when handling cleaner solutions because there are some chemicals that can harm your skin. Also, make sure to wear goggles because these chemicals can also harm your eyes.
Once done, make sure that there is an appropriate amount of fuel for the machine to run, and make sure, too, that you tightly screw the screw-cap on. Remember that fuel is very much flammable, so make sure that it is far from flames.
After this, connect the rubber hose to the water inlet pipe. See to it, too, that the water tank is full as an insufficient amount of water can damage the machine
Before you switch on the machine, make sure that it is in the “off” position before plugging it into the socket. Plus, make sure, too, that the spray nozzle is at the safety position and is not pointing at you or at another person.
When you have turned on the machine, let it warm up for a few minutes so that it will be at its prime operating temperature before cleaning the filter hood.
Cleaning the Filters
When cleaning the filters, make sure that they are propped at an angle against a wall outside the restaurant. Again, you should be wearing your asbestos glove to protect you r hands.
Now, lift the spray gun, aim it at the filters, and wash each filter thoroughly. Once one side is done, turn it over to wash the other side.
After cleaning the filters, turn the machine off and unplug it from the socket. Let the machine cool down for a few minutes before wiping it down with a soft cloth. Wear your asbestos gloves if the machine is still hot so as to avoid burning your hands.
Rinsing the Filters
Rinse the filters off with cold water, making sure that you rinse each side thoroughly to remove traces of the cleaning solution and chemical. After this, let it air dry before replacing the filters back on the hood.
Secure the filters properly so as to avoid accidents like the filters falling down onto the stove when something is cooking on top of it.
