What lenses you own are very good (for Canon XS)?
What lenses you own are very good (for Canon XS)? Not over 1000 dollar lens please…
I am doing researching on what camera I should get. I also have to research the lenses since kit lenses are not good. So the budget for the camera should also include the price for lenses.
The kit lens that comes with the XS is a good quality walk-around lens with built in image stabilization, so that is actually quite a good start. For this particular range, I wouldn’t suggest any other lens.
The other lenses that you should get would depend on what type of photography you like to do. Things you consider are:
**Light level — If you like to take low-light photographs (which typically includes indoor photography and definitely nighttime photography if you do not use a flash) you will need a lens with a low f-stop. The Canon 50mm 1.8 is actually a really great lens that I like a lot and is under $100. This is a fixed length lens, however, so you are limited in the shots that you can take as it does not zoom in or out–however 50mm is a pretty decent length so I find it very usable. It is personally my favorite lens (and I am sure it helped that it was also the cheapest!) **Zoom — Consider if you like taking wide angle shots or are likely to take photos from far distances. If it is the former, the Canon 10-22 is a great choice (and is the lens that I covet!). If it is the latter, either the Canon 55-250 IS (less expensive) or the 70-300 IS (more expensive) are good choices for you. There is about a $300 price difference between the two–which I don’t personally see. If the 55-250 had been available in the US before I purchased the 70-300 I think that I would have gone with the less expensive lens and saved the money for another lens. From what I hear the 55-250 performs very well. **Macro — If you want to take photos very close up to objects like insects or flowers you will need a macro lens which will allow you to remain in focus at a short distance from the object. There are many options for a macro lens, and most that I am familiar with are fixed length (i.e. no zooming in or out), so you would choose what length best works for you, particularly depending on what you are shooting. For instance if you are shooting insects in macro you probably want to allow yourself the most room possible so that they don’t wiggle or fly away. In that case the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is a well-regarded lens that will run you about $550, but there are others such as the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 which is about $400.
If I had my choice, I would buy the 50mm 1.8, the 55-250 (if I was on a budget, and the 70-300IS if I wasn’t), and the 10-22mm to have in addition to the kit lens. Macro is nice, but not necessary unless you really want those type of shots or are looking for a fixed length for other reasons (they are usually sharper than zoom lenses) and choose to get one with macro capabilities.
For more insight and info, I would suggest you check the amazon.com site for each of those lenses and look at the pictures posted by buyers of each of the lens to see the potential (and limitations) of the types of shots that they take. Also, try the forums at http://www.dcresource.com/forums/ to ask questions about particular lenses or get links to view lens comparisons. While I have pointed out only Canon brand lenses, there are 3rd party lenses that are also highly rated and you can easily inquire about other options at the forum noted above.
