Canon XSi kit lens… Questions? Help?
Ok, I want to get the Canon XSi, after much searching and comparing, but I think I might go with a body-only deal and get a different lens… Any ideas?
I am going to be touring Europe, and would really only want one lens that is an all-arounder.
I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on it, I am on a budget and its my first DSLR.
Or since its my first DSLR should I just be content with the 18-55 mm kit lens and just have to accept I can’t zoom a whole lot?

First, a disclaimer: I am a “True Believer” in fast lenses and constant aperture zoom lenses. All suggestions are based on those criteria.
Although the 18-55mm “kit lens” is serviceable its a slow lens with a variable f-stop: f3.5 to f5.6. This isn’t a problem when shooting outdoors in good light but it limits the lens for indoor photography, especially when you can’t use the flash.
So my suggestion is, if your budget allows, a two lens kit. First, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM and second, the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM. The 17-55mm is a constant aperture lens which means you don’t lose shutter speed as you zoom. The 50mm is a lens you’ll be thankful for having when you’re inside a cathedral or museum and flash isn’t allowed.
Is this an expensive kit? Yes it is. I checked at http://www.bhphotovideo.com and found the 17-55mm f2.8 for $960.00 and the 50mm f1.4 for $325.00. Is it worth the money? In my opinion it is. Here are some additional trusted sites you can use to compare prices:

Its possible that you could manage, even indoors, with just the 17-55mm f2.8 zoom as long as you don’t mind using a higher ISO. Suppose you’re in a cathedral with the f1.4 and can manage a shutter speed of 1/125 sec. with ISO 400. If all you have is the 17-55mm f2.8 your ISO will have to be 1600 to achieve the same 1/125 sec. shutter speed. (f1.4 is two stops faster than f2.8; ISO 1600 is two stops faster than ISO 400. Leave the ISO at 400 and your shutter speed at f2.8 will be 1/30 sec.).
Yes, the 17-55mm lens does have Canon’s Image Stabilization (IS) which means you can hand-hold a slower shutter speed but that won’t help if there is any subject movement that you’d like to capture without it being a blur. IS only affects camera movement. Shutter speed affects subject movement. So lens speed wins out over having to use a high ISO and IS.
I realize that much of what I’ve said may have you shaking your head and, perhaps, a bit confused. I apologize if that’s the case. I also apologize if I’ve underestimated your knowledge of photography.
