How Do I Wire a Simple Lamp Socket With A 3-Wire Chord?
Hello,
This may be a really basic question. But I’m trying to make bare bulb “pigtails” for a show. This involves taking a basic 3 prong power cable that’s open at one end and connecting a porcelain lamp socket to it. I’ve found instructions for 2 wire connections all over. Connected the Black wire and the White wire to their respective screws but the chord I have has a Green ‘Ground’ wire as well.
I don’t see any place to connect that to on the bulb socket.
What should I do with the green wire?

The green wire is the earth ground.
If you have an appliance with a metal casing, the theory goes that if you have the hot wire (the one carrying + 120/240 and -120/240 V alternately) accidentally come loose and touch the casing and the casing isn’t grounded, it just gets electrified and the device continues to work — until someone touches it and gets shocked.
If the casing has a connection to the earth ground, it does two things: 1) If the casing *does* get electrified, the ground write will shunt the current to the earth ground (i.e. through a portion of the household wiring down into the earth) and 2) trip the breaker or blow the fuse supplying the cord, as the current through the supply wire and the ground wire to ground will be quite high for a few seconds.
If you’re using a porcelain lamp socket, then there isn’t a spot for the ground wire to go — you can just clip it off. If the socket was being used in a metal lamp, it would get connected to a nut or a screw on the frame, but there isn’t any.
However, the lack of a place to put the ground wire is just a hint for you that your “pigtail” wiring scheme is inherently without a safeguard, so you’ll need to ensure that the *outlet* to which the pigtail bulb assembly is connected is 100% dead before you touch the bulb assembly, or that you use the cord itself to yank it free.
