what Zoom ratio is needed to see planets using a telescope or high telephoto lens?
Hello,
1 – I just bought a nice telephoto lens to do some night sky photography. I was wondering if there is a website to see what the level of zoom that I am suppose to have to be able to see Jupiter, Mars, Uranus.
2 – What telescopes are out there that can do such a function ? Keep in mind that I have an Canon EOS 400D or better known as Rebel XTi in the US with the sigma 18-200mm OS.

Planets are small and bright. They need a long lens to bring out their detail. With an 8 inch diameter telescope, an f ration of 20 to 40 (effective focal lenght of 12 to 30 feet) will give a large enough image scale to get a usable image on film or CCD sensor. At this slow f number, exposures of around a 1/5th of a second will give a decent exposure on a CCD. Film will require experimentation and bracketing to get a good image detail.
Astronomers are using CCD sensors and a system called “stacking” to get all the detail possible. This takes multiple 1/10 or 1/5th second exposures and adds two images then averages pixels then adds another exposure and re- averages the image. A hundred or so exposues stacked in this way will give all the resolution possible with your optics. A computer is used to do this photo editing.
For planetary work, with such short exposures, almost any star tracking mount will do. The problem is, once you get the planetary images as good as you want. you will move to dimmer deep sky objects. This requires a mount that can track accurately for length of the exposure (2 to 20 minutes) Now, you are into a whole new class of telescope. An equatorial mount of this quality can cost $2500 for the mount alone. Optics (telescope) can cost a similar amount.
You say you have a nice tele lens? Google “barn door” mount and build one to track the sky with your camera and lens. If you love the challenge, then think about spending the money to capture those old, faint photons.
To stretch that lens to start doing basic planetary work with it, you can use “tele-extenders.” Astronomers call these Barlow lenses. If you have a 1000mm fl lens, one or two 5x lenses will give you a focal length of 5,000 to 10,000mm. Jupiter Saturn Mars and Venus will all give usable images at this focal length. If it is a 90 mm or 100mm lens, you will be working at f60 to f100 or so. You will need an exposure of 1 or 2 maybe 5 seconds to get any image to show on a CCD. Vibration of any sort will be your enemy during these exposures. Good luck.

Fractional sky pictures = digital camera + optional long lens +$50 for a tripod and barn door mount.
$1000 for really good planetary pics
$5,000 for really good deep sky setup.
$20,000 for premium optics and 2 hour tracking mount. (professional grade)
