Getting Contact Lens? Help?
I have worn glasses for 10 years, and have decided it’s time to get contacts for college.
I would like to know the following:
1.) I’ve heard of stories where the cornea has gotton scratched/infected.
How rare is this, and is it common when learning how to put in contacts in the first time (since begginers dont know how to insert them properly)?
2) How long does it take the eye to allow the lens to familiarize it? i.e. – how long before the eye stops blinking because of a foreign object is trying to be placed onto the eye?
3) Is it possible to ‘lose’ a contact lens in the eye? (or at least stuck at the top or the sides), especially when putting them in the first time? ——- Also, once I put them in, how do I easily take them out the first few times without damaging my eye?
I really want contacts but I also don’t want to be frightened by all the possible unfortunate outcomes I have heard about.

1.) The contacts are the only thing that will actually touch your eye. Even then, you’ll be putting them on the white part (they’ll tell you how to do this, but you’ll put the lens on the white, close your eye, and the lens will slide into place on its own). So it’s very, VERY rare.
Keep your hands clean when putting them in and taking them out, keep the lenses clean, and trim your nails well.
Also, it helps to put an extra drop or two of solution on the lens just before your put it in–this can be a bit tricky as it sometimes causes the lens to fold on your finger, but I find it makes things more comfortable (especially in the morning when my eyes are dry).
2.) It was so long ago, I honestly can’t remember. When you first get them, they’ll tell you to wear them for just a few hours. The next day, you’ll wear them a little longer, then a little longer, etc etc until you’re wearing them all day–they’ll likely give you a chart with specified times for each day. Before I even reached the full day of wear, I forgot I was wearing them unless I saw myself in a mirror without glasses (or went to push my nonexistent glasses up on my face, hahaha).
3.) I remember having this fear. The lens can NOT get permanently lost. It can, however, be improperly placed to where it won’t move into the right spot. Sometimes you won’t be able to find it when this happens–I had it happen the other day. It’s uncomfortable as hell and easy to freak out. If it happens, relax, breathe and close your eye. First, see if you can move your eye to find the lens. If it doesn’t work, close your eye again and VERY GENTLY massage your eyelid from the side of where you think the lense is. Eventually you’ll move the lens to where you can find it. You may be able to move it into the proper place, but you’ll probably have to take it out and try again.
This happens MAYBE once every couple of months after you’re experienced.
Taking them out is probably the easiest part. You basically move them off to the side and sort of pinch them. When you get the contacts for the first time, the optometrist will take you into another room, sit with you at a mirrored desk and give you a “lesson” on putting them in and taking them out. You won’t leave the office without knowing exactly what to do.
