How to choose the right camera lens
As a photographer, you know that a high quality lens is the key to taking exceptional photographs. But because digital SLR lenses come in such a myriad of shapes, sizes, and prices, it can be difficult to know how to choose the right one. Some are built for the demanding needs of professionals and others are designed for the everyday snapshot photographer. Here is how to choose the perfect lens for your distinctive photographic needs:
Decide on a Prime Lens or a Zoom Lens
The optical quality of a good 50mm prime lens is superb. It also offers excellent value for your money, as it is less expensive than a zoom lens. It is small and light to carry around and the fact that it has a fast maximum aperture means that it handles low light situations better than its zoom counterpart.
Today, the standard camera lens to be sold with a SLR seems to be a 28-80mm zoom lens. The primary advantage of a zoom lens is that it is easier to achieve a variety of compositions or perspectives (since lens changes are not necessary). Although a quality prime lens will normally give superior shots, a zoom lens is so much more versatile.
Determine the Focal Length That You Need
There are three basic camera lens types: standard, wide angle and telephoto. The power of a camera lens is measured in millimetres and is known as the focal length of a lens. The 50mm lens is deemed to be the standard lens for a 35mm camera.
Any camera lens with a shorter focal length than this is considered to be a wide angle lens. From Egypt to Dubai, it is a popular choice worldwide for landscape photographers. Any lens with a longer focal length is considered to be a telephoto lens and is ideal for getting excellent close-up action shots.
Special Purpose Lenses
There are many different kinds of special purpose lenses. The most popular is the Fisheye lens, which is an extreme wide-angle lens with an angle of view of up to 180 degrees or more. They have a very noticeable (and intended) distortion. Other kinds of popular special purpose lenses include the Macro lens and Shift/Perspective Control lens.
