Police strobe lights – Lighting from the past updated to provide lighting of the future

The 1930s was a time in history that many would like to forget as that’s when the great depression hit. The 1930s was also the time when strobe lighting was first used as emergency lighting on police, fire and medical first response vehicles. It was during the 30s that additional kit was being added to specialist vehicles to distinguish them from the ordinary traffic on the roads. Police strobe lights were probably the first we saw and they made them instantly recognizable. The strobe is a highly effective light that can be seen from great distances.

Police strobe lights would have initially consisted of an ordinary bulb, which was surrounded by rotating discs. Now the light source is likely to be LED bulbs but the effect is the same if not brighter. There is no doubting the power of strobe lights as a warning and you can’t beat the sense of urgency they convey very well. Strobe lights are no longer just a single beacon light, although you can purchase them as a beacon. Police strobe lights come in light bars and built into other lighting.

There isn’t much in the world that can claim to have been used successfully in crime fighting for over 80 years but the Police strobe lights can lay that claim. The image of a slowly rotating strobe is iconic, and we immediately think of danger and hazard when we see them, which is why they remain a popular choice today. Small strobe lights can be fitted internally on vehicles and that gives good lighting for inside the car. Police strobe lights are certainly high intensity lights and with the new generation LED bulbs on the market, they are brighter still. Whilst police cars need a variety of lighting for various situations the strobe light is one that many have. Police vehicles need to be highly visible in most cases, but in some such as on surveillance they need to be as inconspicuous as possible. Strobe lights that can be magnetically attached to a vehicle mean they can be used at the last moment to draw attention to the fact an unmarked car is there.

Lighting for any kind of emergency vehicle is crucial and the police vehicles need more than others do. Many police vehicles need their lighting to be multipurpose and provide lighting in different situations and emergencies. Traffic advisor lights, light boards, beacons, lightbars and the Police strobe lights all have a rightful place on the vehicle and that is a lot of lights. The fact that that iconic, single strobe light is still so popular says something about how effective it is at what it does. Strobe lights in the new LED types are certainly the lighting from the past updated for the future.
