Softbox light questions?
How do softbox lights work? Do you just set them up and plug them in or do you have to connect them to your camera??? I am wanting to use them to give nice natural light when photographing…but need some help. Thanks.
Actually, there is no such thing as a “softbox light”. The softbox is a diffusion device that can mount on any number of light sources. It can be used with either continuous lights, or studio strobes, or even an off camera flash unit.
Studio strobe lighting is triggered by a PC cord, (NOTE: the term PC has nothing to do with a computer). The cord connects between a PC socket on the camera and the light unit. Many consumer level cameras do not have a PC sync socket, and you must use a hot shoe adapter that has the socket. More common now is to use either a infrared or radio trigger to fire the strobes wirelessly.
Continuous lights are just what it says. They do not flash but remain on at all times. These can be somewhat easier for a “newbie” in studio lighting to use. They are a “what you see is what you get” type of lighting, but they have their own problems, mainly they can get very hot and unless they are VERY powerful, your subject must remain totally still and the camera must be tripod mounted or you will have blurred photos. Studio strobes “freeze” movement and prevent that problem.
Softboxes are placed on the light source to soften the light and reduce harsh shadows. Softboxes will of course reduce the light output and require a more powerful light and / or a larger aperture setting on your camera.
