Metal Tripod
A safe way to get good lightening pictures?
I am fascinated by lightening (I know, it’s weird). I am playing with and learning a lot about picture taking, and I really want to know how people get these awesome pictures of lightning?
For one, what camera settings are best? Long shutter or just really good timing of predicting the flash and a faster shutter speed?
Also, how do you do it safely? I live in a somewhat populated area, so there are lots of houses and trees that block a longer distance view. I don’t want to go stand outside when the storm is close obviously with a metal tripod and my camera! LOL. Some of the lightening strike pics I’ve seen it looks SO close though, so I was wondering….

Try and shoot from a covered area. Under a balcony or protected area. It’s no worries if the storm is in the distance but just get ready to move when it comes closer. To shoot for them is a bit tricky. Remember that it can be quite bright when it strikes so try and meter something (like city lights or street lights) that is similar. Another good way to time it is to have the shutter open (bulb or mirror lock up) and keep it open using a remote trigger release. Then place a good sized piece of black cardboard over the lens being carefull not to bump the camera which is on a sturdy tripod of course!. Each time there is a strike, take the cardboard away until you have had 2,3,4 even 10 strikes.(this works better in dark or night) Then release the shutter and check the results. You can either change your exposure or record more or less strikes.
Using your flash will only help light up foreground detail which on most occassions is not recommended.
