Which is better, Olympus, Minolta or Fuji?
I don’t want one of those Canon’s or Nikon’s like all those amateurs use.
Olympus is arguably the oldest of these optical companies (depending on how the determination of “oldest” is made, since I believe they were the first to produce optical instruments i.e. microscopes). They also are one of the most experienced in BOTH electronics and optics and are without question a leader in developing compact cameras and innovative systems that move the “standard” forward. Their lens designs, while somewhat more limited than either Canon or Nikon are of stellar quality and they generally produce better quality lenses, FOR THE PRICE than their competitors. Compare the “low grade” kit lenses of their DSLR’s with any of their competitors and their “Pro Grade” lenses with any comparable lens from Canon or Nikon. So I would say they offer the best overall value for the price in general.
Minolta is no longer manufacturing cameras but still exists as an office products and imaging technology company. Their camera and photo optical designs have been acquired by Sony who is using them to challenge Canon, Nikon and Olympus by producing a range of cameras designed to compete with the various markets that all three of these companies have carved out. They bring deep pockets to the table, something Minolta did not have, and vast experience in electronics but they have been having problems in the consumer market especially with their attempt to change the media standard to Blu-Ray. Furthermore many loyal Minolta users (myself included) were lost years ago when Minolta abandoned their SR lens mount for the current mount.
For those who are not aware Fuji makes a limited number of DSLR models designed almost exclusively for Professional Photographers who shoot weddings and portraits. They use a Nikon lens mount so virtually ALL Nikkor lenses can be used on their cameras and they offer better image processing than more expensive Nikon models for that genre of photography. So the bottom line is that they are one of the BEST choices for weddings and portraits. Fuji is also instrumental in preserving film technology while also advancing digital technology through their own efforts and collaboration with companies such as Kodak and Olympus.
