Nikon d300s video only questions!! any help would be appreciated!!!?
Hi, so basically I love nikons optics compared to canon, I think the colors they produce are way better and im a video guy. My main reason for purchasing a d300s is the video mode but I am kind of set back by its limitations such as I heard it will only capture 5 minutes, is that true or not? Does the sensor actually overheat or is there a way around this? Others include the infamous flickering and “mudlike” effects which I have seen, and usually appear at night or with artificial lighting. If you have a d300s and use the video mode extensively could you please give me the run through of the pros and cons and anything I should know before making the final decision.
First up, optics don’t really have anything to do with colour reproduction, that’s in-camera processing, you can change it on Canon and Nikon cameras.
I’m not sure about the d300s, but 5 mins seems about right. This is almost never and issue, as right after 5 mins you can start recording again. If you’re a video guy, you should know that it is EXTREMELY rare that you use a single 5 minute clip. In movies, a single scene usually lasts no more the 10 seconds.
Rolling shutter is a bit of an issue, but not so much. There are some aliasing issue, how prominent they are on the d300s I don’t know: http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/article.php/20
pros are the huge range of lenses, shallow depth of field and stellar low-light performance. Cons include crappy auto-focus while recording, shallow depth of field (this is both a pro and con) and rolling shutter and aliasing.
If you’re only in it for video, a dedicated camcorder may be a better option.
