Orange Filter

Orange Filter
Using B&W Film: Orange, Yellow or Red Filter?

I recently started using a 1973 Olympus OM. Sophist it to say, I love it. I have a roll of Ilford B&W film and I want to whites white and my blacks black. I want the best contrasting filter. I have been recommended to these three colors by different people.

Ilford has a very fine description of filters for B&W photography on their website:

http://www.ilfordphoto.com/applications/page.asp?n=45

Click on the various filter types listed for a description and comparison photos which are unfortunately very small.
Schneider Optics has a filter handbook with comparisons (same photos as the ilford site) here:

http://www.schneideroptics.com/info/handbook/

You can download the complete booklet or only the part you need – e.g the titled
B + W Handbook – Black and White

Or see the comparison on the Hoya site:

http://www.hoyafilter.com/products/hoya/cf-07.html

K2 is a yellow filter, G is the orange filter, 25A is the red filter.
They show especially what effect the filters have to a blue sky with white clouds.

On the other two sites you see also how a red or a green filter work with colours like red and green (the rose picture).

I hope this helps – it really depends on the effect you want to create. Nevertheless if your whites will really be white and your blacks really be black depends on more than the filters used. Especially when printing the pics there are a lot of factors which effect the outcome. Even a good negative can result in a poor print if exposure time is wrong, or developing time or the wrong paper is used.

Anyway, enjoy shooting your OM – it’s a very classic camera.

Edit:
@hellomudpie:) I don’t think that in B&W photography darkroom techniques can replace a filter when shooting. Even Ansel Adams – who certainly was master in the darkroom – used filters on the camera. Colour printing is of course a different thing – here you need filters for the right balance.
