i was wondering if the pentax spotmatic is a good camera to start off photohraphy with.
The Spotmatic was the first camera with TTL metering, a better one is the K1000, the camera with the longest production run, over 20 years. It uses the more modern K mount, not that the K mount is exactly modern, but the current (and future) Pentax DSLR’s use the same mount and any lenses you get can be used on those.
I would not advise anyone to start learning photography with film, the instant feedback you get with digital is worth a lot, all the settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO etc) recorded along with the picture helps too.
True all your costs are up front with digital and they’re not cheap, camera, lenses, computer, Photoshop etc. etc. and the learning curve is steep, with film the cameras are cheap, but it’s 50p (at least, much more for enlargements) every time you press the shutter which soon adds up and you don’t see the results till you develop the film so you have to keep notes to see where you went wrong.
I get much better image quality from my Pentax K10D than I ever got with 35mm film, I routinely print 5 foot X 4 foot pictures with smooth tones and loads of detail, which is something you just can’t do with 35mm film as your picture will be covered in grain.
