Photo Lighting
Would I need extra lighting if I am doing a photo shoot in the evening?
So I am doing a fashion photo shoot this September and I was planning to do it around the early evening around 5-6PM. It gets dark around here usually at around 8:30. Normally, I had a lot of light to work with during the summer but since it is nearing fall I am unsure if I may need to get some extra lighting or if using flash will help.
If you can lend some professional opinions, that would be greatly appreciated.

Its totally hard to say without having a few more specifics. If you’re out in the wide open in the country, you may need only a reflector. If you’re more in the city, you may have to get something to fire the flash off camera. You want to avoid the on-camera flash in every case, except where its almost light enough to shoot, but you need a little fill on the face so its not in shadow. Besides that, turn it off.
A reflector is a nice warm light source of light, if you have some light available. Doing pics with the sunset behind you, the reflector is awesome for a nice warm tone, getting proper exposure on a person’s face. Makes for a nice warm higher key outdoor portrait. You gotta be careful not to blind someone with it. It can be pretty harsh in some cases. It will likely be a little uncomfortably bright, but the subject will have to sacrifice for the good of photography, and they’ll forget about it when you get that super dynamic shot.
If you can get some kind of rig where you can get a bracket to put on a tripod to hold a flash and an umbrella, that might be a good way to go. The less light you have, the better option this becomes. You’ll need a way to fire the flash, wirelessly or with a pc sync cord or something. Plain Jane flash units are a dime a dozen on ebay. So there are a few options that will look good with a little practice. I suggest you go out a couple times beforehand to get an idea of what you’ll be working with so you’re not caught off guard by anything. Good Luck!
