Protection Of Fuel System And Diesel Remnants Management After Engine Tests
Many OEMs and High Level Component suppliers report concerns over fluid loss or leakage during process and transport following function, performance trials. Such leakage of fuel, coolant or hydraulic liquid can damage produced parts, labels and packaging, it can create H&S risks to operators and users, and finally it can contaminate the equipment and production floor increasing cleaning and housekeeping costs.
To alleviate these concerns several absorbing solutions were developed by DBI Plastics engineers. Patent protected Absorber tube is an example of how the problem of Diesel spillage after engine test can be solved.Engine test is the final stage of manufacturing process at car engines production plant. The engine is mounted into a special testing bench where fuel is provided to test the whole system. After the test a special device is used to pump out the fuel from the engine. Since it is not possible to pump out all the fuel, protective caps must be used to prevent fuel spillage. The problem appears just before engine assembly when an operator removes the caps – the remaining fuel spills around contaminating operator’s gloves and clothes as well as the engine and plant floor. The fuel could also harm an operator’s eyes. It has also been reported that during engine transport the plastic caps drop off and remaining fuel contaminates the engine.
Taking into consideration all these aspects a new concept of a protecting and absorbing solution has been proposed – a plastic transparent and flexible pipe with absorbing rope / wick inside. Such a solution of different length was then applied and tested on engines. The tubes absorbed all the remaining fuel so protected inlets and outlets were dry and operator’s gloves were not contaminated any more. The solution can v be produced in clean room environment when required.
