my caterpillar has died and in it’s jar is a white maggot and a red pupa case. What has happened?
The monarch caterpillar was hanging in a J ready to change into a chrysalis then the next morning it was dead and looked all shriveled up in the middle with this other insect in the enclosed jar. It looks as if the maggot came out of the caterpillars body. Help please!
The caterpillar was parasitized, probably when it was young, by a tachinid fly which completed development through the late larval stage and emerged from its dead host. The fly larva will now pupate, and from the pupa will emerge an adult fly.
