Are Zip lock bags and six pack retaining rings the same material as plastic milk bottles?
Are Zip lock bags and six packing retaining rings the same material as plastic milk bottles?
My trash recycling bin says no plastic bags. Can I stuff Zip lock bags and six packing retaining rings inside the plastic milk bottles?
six pack retaining rings and plastic milk bottles are both made of HDPE – high density polyethylene. They’re basically the same thing and would be recycled as such, together. They’re recycling type ’2′.
zip lock bags are made of LLDPE – linear low density ppolyethylene. They’re recycling type ’4′.
The reason they say no plastic bags is to make sorting easier. They’re not saying you can’t put plastic bags in, they’re saying that you can’t put your waste INTO bags (making it so someone has to open the bag at the recycling center).
The short answer is yes, you can do it, but you can’t be sure it’ll be ‘recycled’ properly that way. Your best option is keep them seperate, fill your recycling bin, and stay green!
