SD vs. SDHC: What Users Need to Know
Expanding the memory of electronic devices is perhaps the best way to utilise full technological capabilities, increase the life of a device and enhance user facility frugally. Increasing the digital storage capacity of a laptop, PDA, mobile phone, games console, media player, digital camera or digital SLR camera is simple – memory cards!
Digital SLR cameras require CF (Compact Flash) memory cards thanks to their technical capability in terms of speed, image quality, physical toughness and potential memory size (up to 128GB) CF cards tend to be more expensive than their smaller cousins, but their superior size, hardy design and potential for uses as varied as SSDs (Solid-State Drive) has embedded them well into their own niche market.
However, in terms of widespread use the SD (Secure Digital) memory cards and Micro SD (Micro Secure Digital) memory cards are more prolific. SD memory cards typically cater for digital camera, digital camcorders, PDAs, media players and video game consoles. Micro SD cards are perhaps the more limited of the two, with main employment being in mobile phones, GPS and handheld gaming consoles e.g. Nintendo DSi.
SD memory cards comprise dimensions of 32 x 24 x 2.1mm. The further definition of HC (High Capacity) can be added to both SD and Micro SD memory cards. The world of technology loves superfluous initials, but in this case their function and definition is pretty basic. SD cards have a maximum capacity of 4GB, over which they’re termed SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) memory cards. Likewise, Micro SD cards over 4GB are referred to as Micro SDHC memory cards. Designed for devices compatible with SD 1.0 and 1.1 technologies, SD cards are usually inexpensive, easily available and compatible with relevant devices on a very basic level. The smaller memory capability of SD cards can prove infuriating for some users, particularly in the case of older devices which may not be compatible with SDHC memory cards and therefore there is no option above 4GB. Memory cards under 4GB do have a few key advantages over their higher capacity relatives – notably low price and widespread compatibility.
SDHC Memory Cards
A maximum capacity of 32GB makes SDHC the memory card of choice when it comes to emerging technology designed with the SDHC 2.0 format in mind. Boasting a staggering maximum capacity of 32GB, SDHC memory cards are understandably popular and surprisingly inexpensive with a little shopping around. Devices designed for SDHC cards are backwards compatible with SD cards (meaning SD devices work with both SD and SDHC cards), however the same cannot be said likewise.
