Single Posts and tripods
Many climbers are suitable for training up single posts, often called pillars, although it is probably best to avoid very vigorous climbers. If space permits, a series of pillars can be erected along a path, linked garland fashion by chunky rope along which climbers can grow. Climbers also look effective trained up tripods or, alternatively, you can make your own supports from canes. Training a climber over a hoop allows you to direct the growth so that it covers the available space with an abundance of flowers. Bending the new growth into curving arches encourages flowering buds to be formed along the whole stem rather than just at the tip.
A hoop will also keep the climber in proportion to the border in which it is growing, and is a useful method of growing vigorous plants in a limited space. Whichever free standard support you choose, it is essential that it is anchored securely into the ground. Dig a hole at least 2 feet deep. Put in the post and check that it is upright. Backfill with earth, ramming it firmly down as you work. In exposed gardens a more solid pillar can be created by filling the hole with concrete.
Plants can be tied directly to the post but a more natural support can be created by securing wire netting to the post. Self clinging climbers such as clematis will then be able to climb by themselves with little attention from you other than tying in wayward stems. Plant the climber a little way from the pole. Lead the stems to the wire netting and tie them in. Self clingers will take over, but plants such as roses will need to be tied in as they grow. Twining plants, such as hops, can be grown up the pole without wire.
To protect a tender shrub using a shield, insert three stout stakes firmly into the ground around the plant, then wrap a plastic sheet or several layers of horticultural fleece around the outside of the stakes. Tie securely and peg down the bottom to secure. If you do not want to erect a shield, perhaps on aesthetic grounds, cover the plant with a large plastic bag or horticultural fleece sleeve, pegged to the ground, when very severe weather is forecast. Remove it afterwards. Trim heathers with shears after flowering. Cut just below faded flowers but avoid cutting into the old wood because it will not re-sprout.
