Share Printer
How do I share my printer on a home network?
I have an HP printer connected to my iMac by USB. My roommates and I just installed a network switch so we can share a wired internet connection. Is there a way I can set up my Mac as a print station and my roommates with Windows 7 computers can print to my printer? The USB port is the ONLY connection port currently installed on the printer. ***PLEASE*** NO Mac/Windows hating in answers!
The switch is the central point. Your internet, your PC and your roommate PC also plug into the switch. These are shared devices only when they are on, if they are off then everything attached to it is also off line.
If you want to share the printer all of the time you need to plug it into the switch or the computer it is plugged into must be on all the time. If it will not plug directly into the switch then I would go with an adaptor that will plug from the printers USB to the switch ( if it is not USB), otherwise attach a HUB from the switch and plug the printer into it.
At the end of the day, you should have three things plugged into that switch. 1.) The Internet 2.) Your PC 3.) The 2nd PC 4.) The Printer
All of them will be shared devices on this network, and the administrator will have access to all of the resources for the network, and the ability to grant permisions to the workstation.
