Shoe Sync
Using external strobes in live view? Canon DSLRS?
We have Canon 40D’s currently, but haven’t been able to hook up our strobes using the hot shoe or pc sync when the 40D is in live view. Is it just not possible? If it is, can someone tell me how to do it?
I should say, we can hook them up, they just won’t go off while in live view. We have been able to trigger them with our flash (580EX II) while in live view, but were trying to avoid that.
If its not, does canon have any DSLR’s around the same price range as a 40D that can set off a strobe while in live view?
We were thinking of the Rebel XS or the XSi, but we don’t want to get stuck with the same problem.

In the 40Ds menus you’ll find the live view shooting menu. It’s the first yellow menu (I don’t have the camera in front of me). The flash is linked to which shooting mode it’s in for live view. I believe that you don’t want to be in any of the silent modes, but try all three to see which one works.
The Rebels will be about the same function wise except you wont have a PC port. I don’t know if the XS has live view or not, but the XSi is pretty close to the 40D from what I’ve read.
If all else fails you could use the 580EXII and set it to M mode (you don’t want the TTL preflashes) while setting the 580 to it’s lowest power. If that’s not enough to trigger your optical triggers on your externals you could connect the PC port as it’s now active with a TTL flash in the hotshoe.
