Universally accepted measures for containers
Nowadays, almost everyone is familiar with the buy or hire containers business. But, only a few people will be aware about its hardcore quality concern. Container was introduced into the regular practice in late 1780s. Experts do mention that global standardization of containers and container handling equipment was one of the most important innovations in 20th century logistics.
Records suggest that by the 1830s, it was frequently used on railroad in several continents for transferring goods through ships and trucks. But, then containers were invariable in shape and size. Later on, everybody realized the need of standardization of ISO recommendations. The first four ISO recommendations were:
- Defining terminology, dimensions and ratings in January 1968.
- Identification marking was defined in July 1968.
- Recommendation on corner fitting approved in January 1970.
- Minimum internal dimensions of general purpose freight containers approved in October 1970.
Accordingly an unofficial data, presently containers are being used in carrying approximately 90% non-bulk cargo worldwide. Thus, it is so obvious to understand the reason behind rapidly prevailing business of used containers New Zealand. Universally acceptance of ISO measures has prominently driven modifications in other freight moving standards as well. For instance, it forced removable truck swap bodies to turn into standard shapes and sizes.
Universal sizes of containers has certainly lessened the problems occurred by incompatible rail gauge sizes in different countries. Normally, rail network operates on 1435 mm gauge track but in some other countries like India, Russia, and Spain; there is different measurement. Thus, the significance ISO certified containers exposes here. With the use of container trains in all these countries, we experience easier trans-shipment process between different gauge trains.
While we minutely study the quality measuring system of containers, we feel the influence of US department of defense. Imperial measurements for describing container size in terms of TEC & FEU have certainly reflected the essence of US department of defense. Nowadays, 40 ft (12m) container size is the most popular one standard size worldwide. Bit longer container size is in practice especially in North American region. There is shorter container (10ft or 3.0 m) in practice as well but very rare.
