What are some good quality light stands that are relatively cheap?
I’m in the market for a couple of lightstands. The ones I own currently came with my lights, and are “ok” but I’ve never shopped for lightstands before. Anyone have any suggestions of something kind of middle of the road? I don’t need a $300 light stand, but at the same time I want something I can rely on for a good while at least.
I recently researched (with the help of friends) this very question. The stand in question needed to be at least 6 feet tall, light enough to carry over rough terrain, but sturdy enough to hold up to wind (tied down) and the travails of travel. I decided on the Manfrotto 5001B, $60 from Samy’s in LA.
I looked at quite a few ranging from 20 to $100. I chose this one because the legs open out flat, enabling me to use the camera bag as a sandbag. The hardware is well made, and will take a beating – In addition to holding each section of stand, those little screw thingys (I honestly don’t know what they are called) have to hold the rope to brace the stand against the wind.
If you want it for studio use, a few of these stands should last a lifetime if you don’t seriously abuse them.
