Patio Umbrella Bases: Sizes and Dimensions
Patio umbrellas can be a nice addition to any exterior. However, umbrellas of this size do need to be placed in patio umbrella bases. Without a reliable outdoor umbrella base, the umbrella is not going to be able to remain effectively in place. Not all bases are the same. Umbrella bases can vary in their design. Among the most popular ones would be cast iron bases although there are certainly other models available.
Many will seek to purchase those stands that are aesthetically pleasing. This is fine provided that the size and weight of the stand is the appropriate one for the actual umbrella. Sure, you purchase the umbrella that appeals to you the most. However, without the right size stand, you will find your umbrella purchase to be disappointing. After all, the umbrella might not be able to stand up properly if it fits into its base effectively.
The first step towards effectively getting the right outdoor umbrella base would be to determine the exact size of the umbrella. Once you have made such a determination, you can then look towards finding the right umbrella bases for said umbrellas.
In general, a free standing umbrella will likely need a base that is heavier than one that is in a patio table. For those interested in specific size and weight delineations, the following ratios are most common: a 6 to 7.5 umbrella would usually require 35lbs or less in a base; a 7.5 to 9ft umbrella would usually require 40 to55lb in a base; a 9 to 11ft umbrella would usually require 65lbs to 75lbs in a base; and any base that is 100lbs or more, it can support virtually any umbrella. Granted, you will not want to put a very small umbrella into a huge base since it would look mostly awkward.
Then again, you might be well advised to put any size umbrella into a very large outdoor umbrella base when the exterior environment is windy. Obviously, the wind will put a great deal of pressure against the umbrella and might tilt it over. If the base is extremely sturdy, then the wind will have a hard time tilting the umbrella over. A lighter base may struggle with holding an umbrella in place since it just would not be sturdy enough, and you always want umbrella bases to be sturdy.
One thing that needs to be pointed out is the fact that an umbrella that tilts over is not just annoying; it can be a dangerous thing since the errant umbrella could injury someone. Again, the wind can put a little bit of velocity behind the umbrella which can enhance injury potential as a result. This does need to be the item of main importance when placing an umbrella in a base. You do not want any safety hazards present.
When seeking to add an umbrella to your exterior patio, you need to have the right outdoor umbrella base in which to place the umbrella. This will ensure that the umbrella stays in place, provides the shade desired of it, and maintaining proper levels of safety when using the umbrella.
