What is the micron rating of standard filter paper used in labs? Is it enough to filter Chlorella from water?
I’m doing a science project where I am growing Chlorella. I need to filter it and dry it to obtain a final product of powdered Chlorella. Any suggestions on filters I can use or make which are not very expensive? I was thinking about using normal filter paper which can be found in any lab, but I can’t seem to find the micron rating on the web. Chlorella has a diameter of 1-10 um. Also, are there any methods which I can use to dry it (must not be expensive too)?
The type of general purpose filter paper commonly found in a school chem lab,
such as Whatman No.1, is not good enough for your application because it’s
rated at 11 microns. In fact, most of
the common Whatman papers have a rating of at least 2.5 microns or greater.
However, Whatman No.602 is rated at <2 microns, which would probably catch
most of your Chlorella sample. A well-stocked chem lab will probably have No.602 paper.

As for drying, vacuum drying is one of the more efficient methods for speeding things up.
It's a simple matter of placing the sample inside a sealed flask or other air-tight container
of some type, and attaching a rubber hose connected to a vacuum pump. You can see the
proper technique and equipment setup for vacuum drying in just about any book on basic
lab methods.
