Tessar Lens
Why does a simple Tessar lens deliver a more pleasing image than my multi-element big lenses?
My big lenses can be more sharp, but not as sweet as the Tessar.
I am a dummy. I know little of lens characteristics.
The reason they are multiple elements is because its a constant struggle of how to fix what with what piece of glass. You are going to have distortion, so there’s an element or elements to correct that. You’re going to have chromatic aberration, so there are elements to correct that. Simple glass yields less problems. Its not a matter of trying to maneuver 9 groups of 16 elements to make sure that the spacing is exact when you’re shooting with a simple lens. With less moving parts, there are less chances for anything being messed up due to something being a thousandth of an inch off. Multiple element lenses are very precise, but who’s to say they are exact. Simple is good if you can pull it off. If you can’t, there is usually a lens to make it so.
