about my brinkmann gas grill. I have a new propane (tested and working) tank, i turn the gas on, and it goes f?
it works for about 5 seconds then dies off. Thinking it is the regulator, but do not know how to test it or fix it. Any ideas?
Further detail:
I very slowly turned on the gas after waiting 5 seconds. Still no air flow. I don’t think it is the gas tank but something to do with the burners or the regulator (whatever it is) on the line. Any further ideas?

Propane Cylinders have an excess flow valve built into the service valve that is there to sense if the hose is cut or ruptures. If it senses fuel flowing too quickly, it severely restricts the flow of gas.
It sounds like you may have opened the cylinder valve too quickly or had the appliance controls turned on high before you opened the cylinder valve.
Make sure the controls on the appliance are off. Then disconnect and reconnect the cylinder. Open the cylinder valve very slowly and only crack it slightly open. Wait 5 seconds and then open the valve all the way. Light the appliance and it should operate properly…
By the way…There are no thermocouples on a grill.
Edit: The next step in diagnosing this requires a bit of technical sense. If you aren’t comfortable with trying what I describe here, ask someone who has done it before to assist you.
You need to remove the cooking grids etc and get down to where the burner is. remove the burner and inspect it carefully for plugged burner holes, cracks or holes from corrosion. Use a wirebrush to clean up the burner and a paperclip to poke through all of the burner holes and make sure they are clear. The venturi tubes that lead to the burner are a favorite spot for spiders to nest. Since the gas pressure flowing through these tubes is very low, it doesn’t take much restriction to block them. Use a piece of wire (not too rigid like a coat hanger) or you can actually buy a brush specifically for this, and push it up the venturi tubes all the way into the burner. Look at it carefully when you pull it back out and see if there is traces of a web on the tip. Hopefully that is it! If you can, blow out the burner with compressed air and reassemble the unit. Make sure the venturi tubes go back over the orifices properly! Then test fire the unit.
Grills are a pretty simple device, so if that doesn’t correct the issue it can really only be a faulty regulator or debris in the controls. Regulators are pretty simple to replace and not expensive.
